Brief Introduction:

I have been training dogs since 1994. Currently I have one dog: Joey, a 3 year old Italian Greyhound. The dogs pictured are: 2 Shelties, Patrick Ryan and Dani Joy with one Italian Greyhound, Skip (all passed away now).

Training Methods:

Dogs at Gridley June 2009

I take a unique, individualized approach to dog training that’s based on a scientific as well as an experiential understanding of canine behavior. I’m here to help YOU communicate with your dog in order to stop bad habits and replace them with good behaviors. With each dog I take into account the individual dog’s breed traits, history of socialization and environment as well as the dog handler’s skills and expectations. I believe that each dog has their own unique temperament and personality, so I do not ascribe to a “one size fits all” method of training. I follow the LIMA (Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive) philosophy as outlined by the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. Positive dog training techniques are used and yet, I make sure I have a “trainers tool box” full of ideas, time-tested techniques and current scientific evidence based methods that will give you and your dog confidence helping you build a bond that will last a lifetime.

As a professional dog trainer, it’s important to have a balanced approach to dog training. It is of utmost importance to keep current on the latest scientific evidence based learning theories in dog training and not get “stuck” on outdated or disproven learning theories. I also recognize that there is much to learn from old training methods and to not “throw the baby out with the bath water” so to speak. Animal Behavior Psychology is a constantly evolving field of learning. I continue my education and training experience in a wide variety of online seminars/workshops, traveling to conferences, books, subscriptions/memberships magazines, online email groups, consulting with other dog training professionals, and other learning opportunities.

Dog Training Services:

Group training sessions encourage socialization and success. I offer numerous classes of Dog Training from Puppy Training to beginning Obedience, Intermediate and Advanced classes. I also offer classes and testing/evaluations as an AKC/CGC Evaluator & Trainer in: AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, AKC/CGC, CGCA (Community Canine), CGCU (CGC Urban). I am an AKC Trick Dog Evaluator, an AKC Farm Dog Certification Judge and an AKC Temperament Test Judge. Periodically, additional classes offered either by myself or with other guest instructors: Fun Tricks for Dogs, Scent Work, Agility for Fun, and other classes and events.

Education and Background

I graduated with honors and am a mentor for the Animal Behavior College. I have mentored under many of the best professional dog trainers in the Northern California region. I was a member and Dog Trainer for 13+ years with the Nor Cal Dog Training Club (no longer exists). I was Petco Dog Trainer for 4+ years. I was a dog trainer at Shasta Dog Training and Boarding (offering Board and Train services as well as classes on premises) for 8+ years.

I am still active in the Dog Training community and participate with the non-profit group Shasta Dogs and occasionally participate or judge at other dog events such as the Shasta Kennel Club.  I have worked with several dog rescue groups and dog shelters in training/evaluating dogs, training foster dog parents, and fostering/rehabilitating rescue dogs.

My Personal Background

I have owned a variety of dogs throughout my life including many Big Dogs, Medium Dogs, Small Dogs, Mixed Breeds, Coon Hounds, German Shepherds, Labradors, Dobermans, Poodles, Hounds, Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties) and Italian Greyhounds. I began training my own dogs in the early 90’s and shortly thereafter became a trainer with the Nor Cal Dog Training Club and offering private lessons.

All of my dogs have earned a number of dog titles in a variety of dog sports and activities. Five of my dogs have obtained the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizenships (CGC, CGCA, CGCU) Award/Titles. My Chocolate Lab, Megan and both my Shelties, Patrick Ryan and Dani Joy have earned titles in the dog racing sport called Flyball. Patrick Ryan, Dani Joy, Skip, and Joey have earned titles in AKC Competition Rally Obedience. Megan earned her Novice Obedience Title through ASCA. Skip, my Italian Greyhound earned his Trick Dog Novice, Intermediate and Advanced Titles. At 13 years old, Skip also earned his AKC Farm Dog Certificate Title and received the AKC Achievement Award Certificate. In addition to the variety of dog sport activities previous mentioned. Joey has earned his BCAT title in AKC FastCAT. I have trained my dogs and taught classes in obedience, rally obedience, agility, beginning tricks, canine musical freestyle, heel work to music, clicker training, and beginning tracking

How much do you charge? I have a pit bull I got when she was 6months or older. She is great with kids but most adults that come to visit she barks and sometimes tryes to bit them. She likes woman better than men. Help is it a lost cause?

    • Hi Michelle, most dogs are rarely a lost cause. My prices for private lessons begin at $55 per visit. The price could be more if your dog is extremely reactive, or if I have to travel out of the Redding/Anderson area. Please give me a call at (530) 356-8286 & we can see what may work for your situation.

Hi Kathy, I have a 15 week Klein poodle. I’m interested in taking her to classes. My problem is we live in Fall River Mills, east of Redding about 70 miles. Do you have any classes during the day that I might be able to take and what are there prices? I want to work towards the CGC etc. Thank you for any help you can give me. Cheryl Smith

    • Hi Cheryl,
Many apologies for not responding sooner to your questions. Even greater apology if you’ve been one of the unfortunate people I’ve neglected to return phone messages. Since the end of August, I have been without a training location. I am currently offering private lessons, one-on-one, in your home, or at an agreed upon location based upon your training needs.

Generally, private lessons begin at $55.00 per 1-hour session. Prices may be higher depending on if you’re are NOT in the general immediate Redding/Anderson area, or if you have multiple dogs, or dealing with some serious aggression/dog reactivity issues. Since you are located a hit further than I generally travel, perhaps if you are still interested we can meet somewhere sort of in the middle like Bella Vista or Palo Cedro.

Puppy and beginning Obedience/manners class are typical $95 for a total of 6 class sessions, generally 1-hour long.

Presently I am without a training location for classes. However, I do have something in the works & hope to announce class location, days, & time.

Thank you for visiting m website & for your interest.
